平戸島
Japan's first foreign trading port, where church steeples and temple rooftops share the same sightline.
Japan's first international trading port, where Dutch and Portuguese merchants established posts in the 1500s before Dejima was built. The unique townscape layers a castle, Buddhist temples, and Catholic churches within the same sightline, the famous view of Hirado's church steeples framed by temple rooftops is called 'the cross and the temple.' The reconstructed Dutch trading house displays VOC-era artifacts.
