Overview

Viewpoint to witness the rare 'hijikawa arashi' - river mist flowing like rapids through the valley at dawn.

The Hijikawa Arashi Overlook in Ozu, Ehime Prefecture, is the prime vantage point for witnessing one of Japan's most ethereal natural phenomena. On clear autumn and winter mornings, cold air from the mountains meets warmer river air to produce dense fog that rolls through the Hijikawa valley like a rushing white river, spilling dramatically over Nagahama Ohashi Bridge and out into the sea. The phenomenon typically occurs between late October and early March, with the best conditions arriving on calm, cold mornings just after dawn. Arriving before sunrise is essential, and the overlook parking area fills quickly on prime viewing days, so aim for a weekday visit when possible.
