Higashiyama Zoo

東山動植物園
Japan's second busiest zoo and one of Asia's largest, nestled in green surrounds as a top Nagoya attraction.
Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens sprawl across a forested hillside in eastern Nagoya with over 125 species housed in naturalistic enclosures that use the hilly terrain well. The zoo's silverback gorilla Shabani became a national internet sensation for his photogenic good looks and remains the most photographed animal here, but the zoo also holds koalas, polar bears, elephants, and a strong big-cat collection. The adjacent botanical gardens include a large greenhouse complex with tropical, desert, and aquatic plants, plus walking trails through the surrounding forest. A sky tower observation deck at the top delivers views across Nagoya and, on a clear day, the peaks of the Japanese Alps. A small amusement park rounds out the facility for families.
