Higashi Honganji Hakodate Betsuin Temple

本願寺函館別院
The draw is the construction: Japan's first reinforced concrete temple, from 1915, looks conventional outside but is held up by an early reinforced concrete frame. Inside, this modern frame gives way to wooden floors and a central altar of black lacquer and gold leaf. The doors open at 6:30 AM.
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
