飛騨大鍾乳洞
Japan's highest-altitude limestone cave, featuring an 800m lit walkway through otherworldly stalactite formations.
Discovered in 1965 at an elevation of 900 meters, Hida Daishonyudo is one of Japan's largest limestone caves and its highest-altitude show cave. The 800m walking course passes through three levels of illuminated chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, and underground pools. The constant 12°C temperature provides welcome relief in summer. Adjacent is a museum housing the eccentric collection of a local businessman, including a gold shrine and Rodin sculptures.
Wear non-slip shoes. The cave floor can be wet and slippery. The third level is the most impressive but also the steepest, so save your energy for the climb.
