The Heisei Shinzan Nature Center was built in 2003 on lava and ash deposited during the 1990-1995 eruptions of Mt. Fugen on the Shimabara Peninsula.
Built in 2003 on lava and ash deposited during the 1990-1995 eruptions of Mt. Fugen on the Shimabara Peninsula. Its exhibits explain how volcanic forces shape the land over time, with a comparison between nearby Mt. Mayuyama and the Taruki Plateau showing how eruption traces remain in soil for centuries. Hands-on displays trace how different volcanic conditions produce different rock types, backed by monitoring data collected throughout the entire eruption period. Outside, a boardwalk trail winds through the recovering forest around the center. Bunkers along the path serve as emergency shelters, and the top of one offers a view of the still-active Mt. Heisei Shinzan peak.
