Overview

When you arrive at Hateruma Island, you've come as far south as you can in Okinawa and Japan.

Hateruma is the southernmost inhabited island in Japan, a small coral atoll in the Yaeyama chain with a population of just a few hundred. Nishi Beach draws visitors with powder-white sand and water in vivid shades of blue, while the island's dark skies make it one of the best stargazing spots in Japan, including views of the Southern Cross from the Hoshizora Observation Tower. There are no traffic lights or convenience stores, just a handful of guesthouses and small restaurants. A high-speed ferry from Ishigaki takes about an hour, weather permitting. Bring cash and come expecting simplicity.
