Overview

Marugame inn-restaurant offering uchiwa fan-making and indigo dyeing alongside local Kagawa cuisine.

Tonbiii in Marugame is a workshop-style venue where you can try making uchiwa, the flat round fans that Marugame produces more of than any other place in Japan. The experience takes about an hour and walks you through the traditional paper-and-bamboo construction process. Indigo dyeing sessions are also available and produce a small cloth piece you take home. The owner is knowledgeable about local craft history and happy to explain the regional significance of uchiwa production, which dates back to the Edo period. The workshop doubles as a small cafe where you can sit with tea after your session. Book ahead, as group sizes are kept small.
