Overview
This is the oldest private residence preserved in Niigata Prefecture.
This is the oldest preserved private residence in Niigata Prefecture, home to 15 generations of the Hasegawa family, who at their peak owned around 70 percent of the surrounding arable land. Built in 1716 after a fire destroyed the original, the structure is engineered for the region's heavy snowfall, with a deeply slanted roof and high-grade local timber. A narrow moat stocked with koi surrounds the complex, which includes a main house, storage buildings, and a former rice warehouse converted into a museum displaying Hasegawa family archives.
