Artisans hand-craft delicate wasanbon sugar confections using traditional methods preserved for over 200 years.
Wasanbon is a refined sugar unique to the Sanuki region of Kagawa, produced through a labor-intensive process of repeated kneading and pressing that gives it a delicate, melt-on-the-tongue texture unlike any other sweetener. At Hane, artisans still craft wasanbon confections by hand using wooden molds, pressing the sugar into seasonal shapes, cherry blossoms in spring, maple leaves in autumn. You can watch the production process and purchase beautifully packaged boxes that make elegant souvenirs. The subtle sweetness and craftsmanship behind each piece reflect over 200 years of Sanuki confectionery tradition.
