Handayama

Handayama Botanical Garden sits on a hillside above Okayama and was established in 1964 with a collection that now includes over 3,200 plant species. The garden is laid out across terraced sections, with separate areas for roses, herbs, Japanese plants, and a greenhouse holding tropical species. The hilltop position gives views over Okayama city below and the plains stretching toward the Seto Inland Sea. Spring brings cherry blossoms and wisteria, and autumn adds chrysanthemums to the year-round displays. It's a working botanical garden rather than an ornamental park, which gives it a more educational feel. The combination of plant diversity and the elevated city views makes it a pleasant half-day that requires little planning.
