Hanao Jinja Shrine
花尾神社
Overview
Hanao Jinja Shrine, located next to Kanamine Jinja Shrine, is an auxiliary of the main Hanao Jinja in the city of Kagoshima on the mainland.
This small shrine on Kuchinoerabujima island is an auxiliary of the main Hanao Jinja in Kagoshima city, established during a wave of shrine-building ordered by the 19th Shimazu lord in the 1680s. It venerates Tango no Tsubone, the birth mother of Shimazu Tadahisa, who founded the Shimazu clan that ruled southern Kyushu for centuries. Residents visit to pray for safe childbirth, and a corresponding festival falls on the twelfth day of the eighth lunar month each year. The surrounding area near Kanamine Jinja has a quiet, forested feel that rewards those who take the time to visit.
Local tips
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
