Hakone Tozan Railway

Overview

A century-old mountain railway that climbs Hakone via three switchbacks and 8% gradients, framed by hydrangea blooms each mid-June through July.

Three switchbacks carry the carriage up an 8% grade between Hakone-Yumoto and Gōra, the train reversing direction at each one as it climbs nearly 450 metres in 40 minutes. The line opened in 1919 and still uses curves as tight as 169 metres. From mid-June into July, hydrangeas bloom at window height along the tracks; locals call it the Hydrangea Railway then.
