Overview

Ancient lakeside shrine famous for its vermillion torii gate standing in the waters of Lake Ashi, framed by Mount Fuji on clear days.

Hakone Shrine (Hakone Jinja) has stood at the foot of Mount Hakone since 757 AD, nestled among towering cedar trees along the shores of Lake Ashi. Its most iconic feature is the red "Peace Torii" gate (Heiwa no Torii) that appears to float on the lake's surface, one of the most photographed spots in the Hakone region. The shrine is dedicated to three deities and has long been a place of worship for travelers and warriors. The forested approach through ancient cedars creates a deeply atmospheric experience.

Local tips

Arrive early morning (before 8am) to photograph the torii gate without crowds. The lakeside path from Moto-Hakone port is a beautiful 10-minute walk through cedar forest.
