Hakone Sekisho Checkpoint

Reconstructed Edo checkpoint on Lake Ashi, with life-size inspection scenes most visitors sail past.
Faithfully reconstructed on its original Lake Ashi shoreline site, this Edo-period security checkpoint controlled all foot traffic on the Tokaido highway between Edo and Kyoto. The museum displays life-size figures in period costume demonstrating inspection procedures, and the restored wooden gate and guard towers give visceral scale to the Tokugawa control apparatus. Most Hakone visitors ride the pirate ships past without stopping, making this a genuinely quiet cultural detour.
