Overview
A French-style terraced garden with rose beds, a tropical greenhouse, and a matcha tea ceremony experience.
Opened in 1914, this was Japan's first French-style formal garden, built on a steep hillside with symmetrical terraces, fountain pools, and a bougainvillea-filled tropical greenhouse. The tea ceremony room offers matcha and sweets with views of the garden, and the rose garden peaks in June with over 200 varieties. Despite being a Free Pass attraction, many Hakone visitors skip it entirely.
Local tips
The tea ceremony room at the top of the garden is the best-value matcha experience in Hakone. 700 yen for ceremonial-grade matcha with a view, no reservation needed.
