Overview
A ropeway to the summit of Mount Tamoyachi offering 360-degree views, alpine marsh walks, and some of Japan's deepest powder snow.
The Hakkoda Ropeway ascends 650 meters to the summit of Mount Tamoyachi in about 10 minutes. At the top, a 1-hour walking trail loops through alpine marshland with views of Mutsu Bay, the Tsugaru Peninsula, and on clear days, Hokkaido. In winter, the mountain is famous for 'snow monsters', trees encased in rime ice that form surreal frozen sculptures. The backcountry skiing here is legendary among Japanese powder enthusiasts.
Local tips
The snow monsters (juhyo) are at their best in February. Take the ropeway up and rent snowshoes at the summit station to walk among them. Visibility can change rapidly so check conditions.
