Overview
Carbonated sulfur springs in the Hakkoda mountains with a view of Mt. Hakkoda.
Hakkoda Onsen 'Yusa' is a large, rustic facility located at the base of the Tashiro Plateau. It is famous for its unique 'Ramu-ne' (Ramune soda) bath, a high-concentration carbonated spring that causes tiny bubbles to stick to the skin. It also features 'milk baths' with a high sulfur content. The facility is essentially a large wooden barn with massive pools. The views from the outdoor baths are panoramic, covering the Hakkoda mountain range. It is less crowded than the more famous Sukayu nearby and offers a more relaxed, communal atmosphere. It is a favorite for hikers and skiers returning from the plateau.
Local tips
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
