羽黒山荒澤寺正善院
Kotakuji Shozen'in is the head temple of Haguro Shugendo and one of the few Buddhist sites on the Dewa Sanzan mountains to survive the Meiji government's 1868 order separating Shinto and Buddhism. When nearby Jakkoji Temple on Mt. Haguro was converted to a shrine, its Buddhist statues and principal images were moved here for preservation. The Koganedo Hall houses this collection, spanning the Heian, Kamakura, and Muromachi periods, and is a registered Important Cultural Property. The temple continues the ancient aki no mine autumn peak rituals, performed largely as they were before the religious reforms.
