Overview

Hachimori is a small hamlet sandwiched between the Sea of Japan and the mountains of Shirakami Sanchi.

On the coast where the Sea of Japan meets the Shirakami mountains, the Hachimori Isaribi Onsen resort sits directly across from Akitashirakami Station. It's also known as Hatahata Kan, named for the hatahata sandfish, the official fish of Akita Prefecture and a local delicacy. Most visitors are residents from nearby towns coming to soak and chat, which makes it a genuinely low-key place to experience everyday onsen culture rather than a tourist-facing facility. There's a small farmers' market outside where local vegetables are sold.

Local tips

Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
