Hachimanyama Ropeway

The Hachimanyama Ropeway carries passengers to the 272-meter summit of Mt. Hachimanyama in about four minutes, with views over Omihachiman town to the south opening up as you rise. The mountain was the site of Hachimanyama Castle in the late sixteenth century, and stone ramparts from that period remain scattered among the trees. Zuiryuji Temple stands on what was the castle's main citadel. From the summit station, a short forest path leads to a north-facing viewpoint over Lake Biwa and the Hira Mountains, with Mt. Azuchi and Mt. Kinugasa visible to the northeast, both former castle sites from the same era.
