Hachijo Island
nature
八丈島
Island with unspoiled nature, healing hot springs, and snorkeling in untouched yet inviting beachside waters.
A volcanic island about 290 kilometers south of Tokyo, Hachijojima feels worlds away from the mainland despite being just a 55-minute flight or overnight ferry. Two volcanic peaks define the landscape. Mt. Hachijo-Fuji and the older Mt. Mitsune, surrounded by subtropical forests, hot springs, and rocky coastlines with excellent snorkeling in the clear Pacific waters. The island's Hachijo-jima silk weaving tradition (kihachijo) is centuries old and still practiced by local artisans. Summer draws snorkelers and divers, while the hot springs and lush green hiking trails make it appealing in any season.
