Gyunabe Araiya
restaurant
牛なべ 荒井屋 本店
Established in 1895, serving 'Gyunabe' (beef hot pot), a dish that originated in Yokohama.
Gyunabe Araiya has been serving Yokohama's signature beef hot pot since 1895, making it one of the city's oldest and most storied restaurants. The dish, gyunabe, was born in Yokohama during the Meiji era when Japan first opened its ports to Western influence and began eating beef, previously taboo under Buddhist dietary customs. Thin slices of marbled Japanese beef are simmered at your table in a sweet miso-based broth alongside tofu, green onions, and seasonal vegetables. The atmospheric main branch retains its traditional wooden interior and tatami seating, transporting diners to a bygone age. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends, as the restaurant's limited seating fills quickly.
