Works by painter Kawai Gyokudo (1873–1957) are displayed at the Gyokudo Art Museum, which opened in 1961.
The Gyokudo Art Museum in Ome opened in 1961 to display the work of Nihonga painter Kawai Gyokudo, who lived alongside the Tama River rapids for the last years of his life. The collection spans over 300 works, from detailed nature studies he made at age 15 to paintings produced near the end of his life, rotated seasonally. A replica of his studio inside the museum includes an unfinished painting on a large easel, surrounded by his actual brushes, mixing dishes, and paints. Outside, a karesansui (dry landscape) garden composed of river boulders has been recognized as one of the finest examples of that style in Tokyo.
