Overview
The Gyoja Doketsu, otherwise known as the Gyoja Cave, is a unique natural geological feature that has been carved out over time by erosion. It is the largest of approximately 20 caves across Nagasakibana and was used as a religious spot for ascetic practices, and is a designated Natural Monument of Oita prefecture. A path leads to the cave where the sound of seawater flowing into the cave provides a calming backdrop while visiting the small shrine located inside. Popular times to visit are mid-May and late-August, when the sunsets are particularly magnificent through the opening of the cave which faces the sea.
