Overview
400 year old community festival that draws thousands every summer.
Running for 32 nights from mid-July through early September, Gujo Odori is one of Japan's most beloved Bon dance festivals, with roots stretching back over 400 years. During the four climactic nights of Obon in mid-August, the dancing continues from 8pm until 4 or 5am, and anyone can join in. Locals and visitors form concentric circles in the streets, moving to ten traditional songs accompanied by shamisen, drums, and flutes. No special costume or skill is needed; regulars will cheerfully show you the steps.
