御草庵跡
This grassy plot on Mt. Minobu marks where the Buddhist monk Nichiren lived his final eight years, from 1274 until his death in 1282. He came here after leaving Kamakura, living under the protection of Hakiri Sanenaga. In this simple hut he read the Lotus Sutra extensively, wrote most of his major works, and developed the founding principles of the Nichiren sect. Low stone walls donated by Lady Kenju-Inden define the site today. Nearby stands Gobyosho, an octagonal marble pagoda containing a portion of Nichiren's ashes, inscribed with his mantra Namu myoho renge kyo. The site is considered the founding ground of Kuonji Temple.
