後生掛温泉
Geothermal area in the Hachimantai highlands with bubbling mud pools, steaming vents, and rustic hot spring lodges.
Goshogake Onsen is a traditional 'toji' (healing) spa known for its unique variety of bathing styles. The most famous is the 'Kara-bako,' or box steam bath, where you sit inside a wooden box with only your head poking out, allowing the volcanic steam to warm your body. It also features a natural mud bath, a bubbling 'volcano' bath, and a high-pressure waterfall bath. The facility is located right next to an active volcanic field, and visitors can take a short walk along the 'Onuma' trail to see mud pots and steam vents after their soak. It is a highly sensory experience that feels deeply connected to the earth's geothermal activity. The water is a potent sulfur spring, milky and therapeutic.
