Goshinkotsudo Hall

Nichiren asked in his will to be buried on Mt. Minobu, and his disciples built this octagonal mausoleum to honor that wish. At its center stands a five-storied pagoda donated by the Nagasaki Nichiren Buddhist Association, housing an urn with Nichiren's remains. The building was funded by Nichiren Buddhists from Owari and completed in 1881, then quickly rebuilt after a fire in 1886. Its octagonal design is practical as much as symbolic: the structure is engineered to be lowered underground in the event of a major earthquake or fire. The inner sanctum is not open to the public, even most monks are not permitted inside.
