Gosenken Museum
五先賢の館
Overview
This museum celebrates the accomplishments of the “five sages” (gosenken) who were born in Nagahama.
This museum in Nagahama honors five historical figures who were born in the city: a monk, a painter, a samurai, a tea master, and a poet. The five are Soo Kasho, known for a grueling 1,000-day walking pilgrimage of Mt. Hiei; painter Kaiho Yusho, who moved from austere ink work to gilded landscapes; samurai Katagiri Katsumoto, who fought at the Battle of Shizugatake in 1583; tea master Kobori Enshu, who taught the way of tea to shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu; and poet Ono Kozan, recognized by Emperor Meiji. Displays include personal effects. Panels are in Japanese, so a regional interpreter enhances the visit for international visitors.
