A hidden hillside temple beside its namesake tiny train station, with a serene garden closed to all but walking visitors.

Gokurakuji sits beside the adorable single-platform Gokurakuji Station on the Enoden line, yet most passengers ride right past. Founded in 1259, the temple's compact grounds contain a small but exquisite garden, ancient stone statues, and a treasure hall (open limited days) housing Kamakura-period Buddhist art. Photography of the garden is not permitted, enforcing a contemplative-only experience.

Local tips

Walk from the temple down the Gokurakuji-zaka slope toward Yuigahama. The ocean view that opens up at the bottom is one of Kamakura's most photogenic reveals.
