Overview

A hilltop park with Kochi's best panoramic view and the Makino Botanical Garden, tribute to Japan's father of botany.

This 146m hill east of central Kochi offers sweeping views of the city, river delta, and Pacific Ocean. Adjacent is the Makino Botanical Garden, dedicated to Makino Tomitaro, the 'father of Japanese botany' who catalogued 1,500 species. The garden's greenhouse collection and seasonal plantings are exceptional, and the modern museum building by Naito Hiroshi is beautiful.

Local tips

Chikurinji Temple (#31 on the pilgrimage) shares the hilltop. Combine both for a perfect morning. The temple garden is free.
