Overview
An elegant Zen temple emphasizing understated beauty and meticulous sand gardens.
Representing the height of Higashiyama culture, this temple focuses on elegant restraint and Wabi-sabi aesthetics. Unlike Kinkaku-ji, it was never covered in silver, allowing its beautiful dark wood to shine. The meticulous dry sand garden features a striking cone shaped to resemble Mount Fuji.
Local tips
Walk up the hillside path behind the pavilion for a wonderful elevated view of the temple grounds and the city beyond.
