三鷹の森ジブリ美術館
Hayao Miyazaki-designed museum on the Mitaka edge of Inokashira Park; advance reservation required.
A museum designed by Hayao Miyazaki himself, opened 2001 on the Mitaka edge of Inokashira Park. The building is a 'storyteller's house' with no fixed visitor route, deliberately shaped to mirror the wandering rhythm of the Ghibli films. Galleries cover animation craft (the original cels and storyboards), the museum's own short films (rotated, viewable only here), and the rooftop garden with the 5-meter Robot Soldier statue from Castle in the Sky.
Tickets release the 10th of the month for the following month; sell out in hours. No same-day tickets. Reach the museum on foot from Kichijoji Station via Inokashira Park (15 minutes); the Ghibli-themed Cat Bus (community shuttle) runs from Mitaka Station.
