At the Gerohatsu Onsen Museum, visitors learn there is more to hot springs (onsen) than just bathing.
The Gerohatsu Onsen Museum unpacks the history, culture, and science behind hot spring bathing across about 400 exhibits, with a particular focus on Gero. In the history section, nineteenth-century newspaper rankings of Japan's best springs are displayed alongside souvenirs from hot spring towns around the country. The science section uses 3D dioramas to explain how geothermal water is routed into baths and what minerals do to the body. Hands-on exhibits make it genuinely engaging for children. The museum ends at a foot bath that starts hot and cools as you walk through, putting the experience directly into visitors' feet before they leave.
