下呂温泉

Est. 240Gero, Chubu

Overview

One of Japan's top three hot spring towns, with a free riverside rotenburo and onsen-hopping passes through town ryokan.

Gero has been celebrated as one of Japan's three greatest hot springs since the 10th century, alongside Arima and Kusatsu. The alkaline waters are known for their silky, skin-smoothing quality. A free open-air bath sits right beside the Hida River, and the town sells a 'Yumeguri Tegata' pass allowing you to hop between three different ryokan baths. The compact town is walkable and features foot baths on nearly every corner, plus a quirky frog-themed shrine.

Local tips

Buy the Yumeguri Tegata (1,300 yen) at any participating ryokan. It lets you try three different baths. Start with Suimeikan's riverside rotenburo for the most scenic soak.
