Genkoan Temple
源光庵
4.4Est. 90Kyoto, Kansai
Genkoan in northern Kyoto frames its garden through two openings: a round Window of Enlightenment and a square Window of Delusion, the same maples read two ways. Overhead, a bloodstained ceiling salvaged from Fushimi Castle. Late November draws the foliage crowds; a winter weekday gives you the room and the silence the windows were built for.
Local tips
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
