Gassan Visitor Center

月山ビジターセンター
Before climbing any of the Dewa Sanzan, the three sacred mountains of Dewa in Yamagata Prefecture, stopping at this visitor center on Mt. Haguro's southern flank is strongly recommended. It has real-time conditions on Mt. Gassan, trail safety information, and English-language displays on the area's geology, wildlife, and the Shugendo pilgrimage tradition practiced here for centuries. The pilgrimage symbolizes a journey from this world through death and into rebirth across the three peaks. Hands-on activities include natural plant dyeing. The center also contextualizes the area's literary connections, including Matsuo Basho's haiku sequence in Oku no Hosomichi.
