Gassan Toda Castle, a historic fortress, served as a major political and cultural center in Izumo Province, particularly during the Warring States period (1467–1615).
Gassan Toda Castle on Mt. Gassan in Shimane Prefecture served as the seat of Amago clan power from 1439 to 1566 and was regarded as Japan's most impregnable fortress. The layout placed the main palace midway up on terraced stone-walled enclosures and the most defensible ward at the 190-meter summit. Despite repelling many direct attacks, the Amago clan finally surrendered after a year-long siege in 1566. The site was abandoned when the Matsue domain moved to the newly built Matsue Castle in 1611. The Yasugi City Historical Museum at the entrance has a detailed scale model of the castle and castle town at their peak.
