Overview

At the main entrance to Kamo Garden, the traditional wooden gate and buildings topped with ridged tiles contrast with the dense forest of the surrounding mountains.

Kamo Garden's traditional wooden gate and ridged-tile rooftops have stood at the edge of mountain forest for nearly 250 years. During the Edo period, this was a rest stop along the Akiha road for pilgrims traveling to pray at Akiha Jinja Shrine, who paused here among the irises planted outside the gate. Over the centuries, artists and cultural figures stayed at the estate, and the atmosphere inside has changed little. Strolling past the old buildings and through the carefully tended gardens carries a genuine sense of accumulated time, each part of the property shaped by generations of the Kamo family.
