鰐淵寺
An ancient mountain temple near Izumo reached through waterfalls and moss-covered steps, famed for autumn foliage.
Said to have been founded in 594, Gakuenji is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the San'in region. Nestled deep in a forested ravine near Izumo, the temple is reached via a trail passing waterfalls and moss-covered stone steps that create an otherworldly atmosphere. The autumn foliage here is considered among the finest in Shimane Prefecture, with maples reflecting in the temple's ponds and framing the weathered wooden halls.
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
