Futatsu Torii (Double Torii Gates)

Two torii gates stand near the 120th stone marker along the Choishi Michi trail, roughly one-third of the way between Jisonin Temple and the Koyasan monastery complex. According to tradition, Kukai, the Buddhist monk who founded Koyasan, built the original wooden gates here in 819 to honor the goddess Niutsuhime and her son, the guardian deities of the mountain. For over a thousand years, pilgrims have passed through these gates before ascending to pay respects at Niutsuhime Shrine. On clear days, the view from the path opens onto rice fields in Amano village below, a scene largely unchanged across the centuries.
