Futakuchi Gorge
二口峡谷
Overview
A dramatic gorge with columnar rock formations and a forest trail that few tourists ever find, deep in the mountains behind Akiu.
Beyond Akiu Onsen, the road narrows into the Futakuchi Gorge where volcanic columnar jointing creates cathedral-like rock walls. The 3km Banji-iwa trail follows the Natori River past moss-covered boulders and small waterfalls. The rock formations are a designated Natural Monument, and the trail sees almost no foreign visitors despite being within Sendai city limits.
Local tips
The Banji-iwa columnar rock face is most photogenic in the early morning when sunlight hits the formations at an angle. Bring proper hiking shoes as the trail gets slippery near the river.
