Furepe Falls

フレペの滝

4.4Est. 1 hrShiretoko, Hokkaido

Overview

Cliff waterfall pouring straight into the Sea of Okhotsk, reached by a 20-minute walk through grasslands from Shiretoko Nature Center.

Furepe (Ainu for 'red waterfall') comes from groundwater seeping through the basalt cliffs of the Shiretoko coast and falling 100 meters directly into the sea. There is no above-falls catchment river; the entire flow is groundwater. The 1-kilometer walking trail from the Shiretoko Nature Center crosses open meadow where Yezo deer graze in late afternoon. The viewing platform sits on the cliff edge directly opposite the falls.

Local tips

Late afternoon light catches the spray. The walk is exposed; no cover if it rains.
