Overview

Limestone cave 20km from Saeki with intricate stalactite walls and pillars, among Japan's most beautiful.

A National Natural Monument near Usuki in Oita Prefecture, where a well-lit walkway leads through cathedral-like limestone chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and pillars built up over hundreds of thousands of years. The cave holds a constant cool temperature year-round, making it a genuine relief during Kyushu's humid summers. The largest chambers achieve an impressive scale, and some formations have been given names based on their shapes. The surrounding countryside of rolling green hills and citrus orchards provides pleasant scenery on the drive from Usuki.
