Overview
A Tofuku-ji sub-temple with a garden attributed to the legendary ink painter Sesshu.
Funda-in, also known as Sesshu-ji, is a small sub-temple within the Tofuku-ji complex housing a garden reportedly designed by master ink painter Sesshu Toyo in the 15th century. The compact karesansui features a turtle-island stone arrangement and carefully raked gravel. Even during Tofuku-ji's peak autumn season, this sub-temple remains blissfully quiet.
Local tips
Combine with Ryogin-an next door when it opens for special viewings. Two Sesshu-era gems in one visit.
