Overview
Sacred, tree-shaped lava tunnels used for spiritual rebirth rituals by Fuji pilgrims.
Created when a massive eruption enveloped an ancient forest, leaving hollow, tree-shaped caves in the hardened lava. Worshippers traditionally navigated these dark, narrow tunnels as a ritual rebirth before climbing Mount Fuji. It is a rare and striking geological phenomenon.
Local tips
The caves are incredibly tight and low; wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty, as you will likely have to crawl in some sections.
