Funaoka Onsen
onsen
船岡温泉
Historic sento (public bath) known for its ornate wood carvings and traditional architecture.
While technically a 'sento' (public bathhouse) rather than a natural volcanic onsen, Funaoka Onsen is a Tangible Cultural Property and one of the most famous bathing spots in Kyoto. Built in 1923, it is celebrated for its stunning Ranma (wood carvings) depicting historical scenes and its colorful majolica tiles from the Taisho era. The facility was the first in Japan to introduce an electric bath (denki-furo). It also features a small outdoor bath made of cypress and a rock bath. Located in the historic Nishijin textile district, it provides a very local, neighborhood atmosphere compared to the tourist-heavy resort towns. It is exceptionally friendly to international visitors and travelers with tattoos.
Look up at the ceiling in the changing room to see the carved wood relief of Kurama Tengu, a legendary forest spirit.
