Fukuura Bridge

Graceful vermilion span stretching 252 meters across Matsushima Bay, connecting the mainland to the pine-covered island of Fukuura. Crossing the bridge costs a small toll, but the walk rewards you with views across one of Japan's officially designated three most scenic landscapes, where hundreds of small pine-clad islets dot the calm bay waters. Fukuura Island itself is a quiet botanical garden with walking paths winding through camellia, cherry, and maple trees, making it lovely across seasons. The bridge looks especially striking in autumn when the surrounding islands shift to warm tones, and early morning visits offer the softest light and smallest crowds.
