Overview

Fukujinyama is one of the top tunnel systems at Iwami Ginzan in terms of the quantity of silver extracted.

Along the road leading to Ryugenji Mine at Iwami Ginzan, the Fukujinyama tunnel system tells an economic story about silver mining's decline. The two interconnected tunnels run under the Ginzan River toward the center of the mine, with a ventilation shaft above. Originally dug by a private prospector who financed his own operation, ownership shifted to the shogunate's magistrate in the 1700s as profitability fell and public funds were needed to sustain output. The tunnels are not accessible to visitors but visible from the path, where a nearby interpretive marker explains their significance within the broader silver mine history.
